On Monday, July 27, a new era will begin for the Sullivan County Trustee’s Office as it reopens after a three-day closure in a new location with much more room and, most significantly, easier access for the public.
“This is one more step to provide improved service to Sullivan County residents,” Sullivan County Mayor Richard S. Venable said last week. “The relocation of the Trustee’s Office to The Blountville Campus brings with it a large, flat parking lot and much more room for the public to conduct their business during the trustee’s busiest times of the year.”
“The Blountville Campus” refers to the sprawling 28-acre property formerly home to Blountville Middle School and Blountville Elementary School. Bringing the buildings and athletic facilities back to life has been a passion for Mayor Venable.
At the close of business on Tuesday, July 21, Trustee Angela Taylor and her staff served their last customers from the Trustee’s Office in the historic Sullivan County Courthouse.
On July 27, the office reopened in the front right wing of the former Blountville Middle School (originally Blountville High School) off Blountville Boulevard, near the Sullivan County Public Library.
The new Trustee’s Office is the latest completed renovation of the former schools that once called the campus home.
The old elementary school is now the Sullivan County Finance & Administration Building and houses the county’s Finance Department, Purchasing Department, Mayor’s Office, I.T. Department, and a conference room, among other offices.
“It is sad in a way to be leaving the historic courthouse,” Taylor said. “But my staff and I are all looking forward to being in the new location, and I’m most happy that it will make it easier for our customers, the residents we serve each day. I hope people will be able to get used to the new location quickly. It’s just up the street and one right turn and you’re here. We’ve put signs out at the old location, and our signs on the building here will be up sometime this week.”
Taylor noted the new location—which she helped design—is ADA compliant and makes it much easier for visitors to come and go thanks to the large, flat parking lot with ample parking directly outside the entrance.
At the historic courthouse, on-street parking along State Route 126 was limited. Parking across the street at the bank required crossing the road, while parking behind the building involved navigating a downhill slope. All three options could be challenging for visitors.
Taylor was recently named Trustee of the Year by her peers across the state.
